Bing, Copilot and IndexNow: get into the index before you worry about AI answers
Most “AI visibility” advice skips the dull part: an assistant that searches the web can only cite pages its search index knows about. Microsoft is unusually explicit about this for Bing and Copilot.
Checked on 13 October 2026 against Bing Webmaster Tools help pages and the IndexNow documentation. Bing’s help pages render with JavaScript and change over time; open the source links before you rely on a claim.
What Bing says, in plain words
- One foundation. Bing’s Webmaster Guidelines say Bing search, Copilot and grounding API results rely on the same core crawling, indexing and ranking foundation, so ordinary SEO hygiene also supports eligibility for AI answers and citations. Eligibility is not a promise of being cited.
- Discovery signals. The same guidelines list IndexNow submissions, XML sitemaps, crawlable internal links and links from relevant sites as ways Bing finds URLs.
- robots.txt is not noindex. Bing notes that robots.txt controls crawling, not indexing. If a page should stay out of Bing and Copilot, use
noindex, not just a robots.txt block.
- Stale pages hurt. Bing recommends removing or revising outdated information and telling it when pages are added, changed or deleted, to reduce outdated references in Copilot answers.
- No tricks. Bing warns that content designed to manipulate the language models behind Bing or Copilot can reduce visibility or get content removed.
IndexNow in one paragraph
IndexNow is an open protocol for telling participating search engines that a URL was added, updated or deleted. You prove you control the host by publishing a UTF-8 key file, then submit one URL or a JSON list. Engines that adopt IndexNow agree to share submitted URLs with the other participating engines. Bing’s getting-started page lists CMS plugins and CDNs that do it for you (including Cloudflare’s Crawler Hints setting) and says to check receipt in Bing Webmaster Tools.
Honest takeaway: IndexNow speeds up discovery. It does not guarantee crawling, indexing, ranking or a citation, and it does nothing for engines that do not take part. On 13 October 2026 the official participant list named Bing, Yandex, Seznam, Naver, Yep, the Internet Archive and Amazonbot, not Google, so keep your XML sitemap.
A 15-minute checklist for a small business site
- Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools (free) and submit your XML sitemap.
- Search Bing for
site:yourdomain.com. If your About or service pages are missing, fix that before anything “AI”.
- Turn on IndexNow through your CMS plugin or CDN if it offers it; otherwise skip it, the sitemap still works.
- Make sure robots.txt does not block
bingbot, and that pages you want found do not carry noindex. See our AI crawler guide for the other bots.
- Update or remove pages with old prices, addresses or services. Our why AI gets you wrong guide covers the usual causes.
What we do not claim
- We do not claim that any other assistant (for example ChatGPT) uses Bing’s index. Vendors change their search providers; we only cite what each vendor documents.
- We do not claim IndexNow, a sitemap or Bing Webmaster Tools will make Copilot mention you.
